Engage your MP on the Salmon Allocation Policy

Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) is under pressure to eliminate the principle of Common Property Resource from its Salmon Allocation Policy. This would be a radical departure from common law principles that date back to 1215.

Meet with your MP and write Joanne Thompson, Minister of Fisheries

The B.C. Wildlife Federation and others are mobilizing hundreds of thousands of voters to ensure Canadians’ property rights are not extinguished, the public’s right to fish and that priority access to coho and chinook remains.

Key talking points:

  • Canadian salmon belong to all Canadians
  • Salmon are a Common Property Resource must be in the Salmon Allocation Policy
  • The Public’s Right to Fish must be in the Salmon Allocation Policy
  • Priority access to sportfishing species Chinook and coho over the commercial sector must remain
  • Licensed angling generates $1.3B in annual revenue, $643M in GDP, 9,100 jobs
  • Licensed anglers generate ~$20M in license revenue per year
  • Licensed anglers pay ~$15M in dedicated funds which go to fish conservation, restoration, and enhancement in British Columbia
  • Licensed anglers donate hundreds of thousands of hours and millions of dollars annually to salmon conservation, restoration, and enhancement
  • More than 300,000 British Columbians hold a saltwater and 280,000 hold a freshwater license. We vote.
  • Canadians will not tolerate seeing their property rights extinguished
  • The BCWF is holding town halls across B.C. and talking to the media to ensure Canadians know what is at risk
