Presentation to the Select Standing Committee on Finance and Government Services

Presentation to the Select Standing Committee – Provincial Budget 2021

Investing to create a legacy of fish and wildlife diversity and abundance.

Every year, the B.C. government is required to hold public hearings to get input on priorities for the next year’s budget. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 hearings for the 2021 budget year, are being held virtually in June. A report will be released on these budget consultations in August 2020.

On behalf of our 43,000 plus members, The BC Wildlife Federation welcomes the opportunity to address the Select Standing Committee on Finance and Government Services on the vital issues that relate to natural resource management sustainability in British Columbia.

Vice President Chuck Zuckerman presents the BCWF Budget 2021 submission to the all-party Select Standing Committee on Finance and Government Services on June 12. The BCWF is calling for all parties to honour their election commitments to improve wildlife management, habitat conservation and collaboration. Read the full presentation here.

The BCWF recommends:

  • Establishment of Wildlife Governance and Funding Models with measurable goals and objectives;
  • Creation of a $200 million permanent Water Security Fund for collaborative management of freshwater resources.

The following BCWF recommendations to the Standing Committee of Finance come at a critical time. We encourage BCWF leaders to submit local budget needs and recommendations to the committee overseeing the process. We must address the increasing human footprint on our province and work collaboratively to ensure conservation of our wildlife, landscapes and watersheds for future generations.

The committee is accepting written submissions until June 26, 2020.
