Please take a moment to engage on three land use planning processes encompassing 165,000 km2 or 18.5% of land in British Columbia:
- The B.C. portion of the of Kaska Ancestral territory is 99,000 km2
- The Tahltan-B.C. Land Stewardship Project is 58,000 km2
- The Tlatsini Land Use Planning process for the Taku River Watershed, is 18,000 km2
The land use plans are driven primarily by the province’s interest in increasing mining in B.C.
The province has public surveys for each land use planning process and is seeking feedback from British Columbians on priorities and values.
Watch this video from Jesse Zeman explaining the issue:
The BCWF has identified the following values:
Public Access
- Public access to hunting, fishing, camping and hiking are extremely important to all British Columbians.
- The province has a history of trading off public access for oil and gas and mining.
Science-based wildlife management
- Science is a crucial tool for making informed decisions about wildlife management to ensure the sustainability of wildlife populations.
- The province needs to prioritize science-based decisions over socially engineered decisions.
Funding and Compensation
- The impact of mining is forever. New mines will add roads, transmission lines and other anthropogenic disturbances which will increase cumulative effects.
- The impact of all disturbances must be considered as opposed to project by project.
- The province must create a multi-billion-dollar compensation fund from mining royalties dedicated to wildlife management, enhancement, and restoration projects.
There are three surveys that are currently open for public engagement. Each will take approximately 10 minutes. The links are below:
