As we cannot hold in-person events during this time, Fishing in Later Years webinars will show participants valuable skills that can be used in a variety of outdoor activities. Everyone who joins will have the opportunity to interact with BCWF staff and our guest speakers for a knowledge sharing session.

January 13th, 2021: Bird Identification – Wetlands and Riparian Zones presented by Clive Keen
Are you thinking of taking up bird watching? Then, head first to wherever there’s water. In our second webinar on January 13th, 2021, we will be hosting Clive Keen and he will be talking about wetlands and riparian zones surrounding our waters.
About our speaker:
Clive Keen, the author of Birdwatching: A Different Sort of Guide, will show you how to start recognizing and enjoying the scores of different birds found in ponds, lakes, streams, rivers, and estuaries. Clive Keen is the author of six books and many hundreds of newspaper and magazine articles. He has had a varied career, including heading a marketing and public relations company, but with a parallel career as a Philosophy lecturer and university administrator, acquiring a British Professorship before moving to Canada permanently to help set up the University of Northern British Columbia.

February 5th, 2021: Fly Fishing – History and Perspectives Part 2 (including Fly tying lessons) presented by Brian Smith
February 5h, 2021 is the second part of our Fly Fishing – History and Perspective webinar series presented by Brian Smith and he will teach a fly tying lesson and explain step by step how to achieve the perfect fly. Next to that, Brian will also share his tips and tricks on access for the upcoming fly fishing spring season in B.C.
About our speaker
Brian Smith, the presenter, is an accomplished fly tier, rod builder, author of three books and a fly fishing enthusiast with over 50 years of experience. His specialty is fly fishing for trout in B.C.’s lakes and streams, the foothills’ rivers of Southern Alberta, and chasing steelhead and salmon in the watercourses of northwest B.C. Brian’s work has appeared in the Outdoor Edge magazine, Fly Fishing & Tying Journal, the Canadian Fly Fisher magazine and Northwood Magazine. He’s currently living and chasing fish in Prince George.

March 15th, 2021: Fishing in British Columbia presented by Mike Gass and Jessica Yarwood (FFSBC)
“Fishing in British Columbia” will take place on March 15th, 2021 and be all about fishing in our beautiful province. Our presenters are Mike Gass, Manager of Sport Fishing Development for the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC and Jessica Yarwood, Outreach Coordinator for the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC.
They will be speaking about the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC, including the Trout hatchery and stocking system, accessible fishing areas, and navigating fishing opportunities during Covid-19.
About our speakers:
Mike Gass is the Manager of Sport Fishing Development for the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC, working in the Sportfishing division of the Society for 15 years managing the Society Outreach initiatives and improving access to recreational fishing. Mike has a Bachelor of Science with a major in Biology and is passionate about the outdoors including camping, hiking, and fishing. Born and raised in the Fraser Valley, Mike has been fishing throughout BC for over 30 years.
Jessica Yarwood is the Outreach Coordinator for the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC and has worked for the Society in both outreach and marketing for over 10 years. As the Outreach Coordinator, Jessica is responsible for the planning of both the Learn to Fish program as well as the Rod Loan program provincially. On the weekends you will find Jessica camping or skiing with her family and their new chocolate lab puppy Nutella.
