Frequently Asked Questions

Are you thinking of attending a Women Outdoors Weekend? Here are the answers to some frequently asked questions regarding our weekend getaways. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please email our programs team at programs@bcwf.bc.ca and we will be happy to address them!

What will the accommodations and washroom facilities be like?

Accommodations very from camp to camp, but most likely you will be in a bunk bed in shared accommodations. You must bring your own pillow and bedding and/or sleeping bag. The number of people per cabin depends on the camp facility.

At some camps we’ve attended, the bathrooms are attached to the cabin, but at some camps you will have to walk outside to a different building to use the bathroom. The bathrooms at each camp that we’ve attended so far have been individual use. You will need to bring your own towel, as well as toiletries and shower shoes, if you choose.

Special accommodation and washroom options may be available on an individual basis. Please contact us if you have concerns or unique requirements, and we can find out what is available at the weekend getaway you are planning to attend.

What will the food be like?

The food is buffet style and is catered by the camp. Every camp we have attended so far has been very accommodating to dietary requirements such as food allergies and intolerances. Please let us know about any dietary issues in advance so that we can plan accordingly.

Will alcohol be provided, or can I bring my own?

No, alcohol is not provided or allowed at Women Outdoors Weekends.

Will you be able to accommodate medical needs?

We will do our best to help support your attendance at the Women Outdoors Weekends within reason, just send us an email at programs@bcwf.bc.ca and let us know how we can best support you. We can also help by contacting the camp that you are interested in attending, for example if you need to know how accessible the cabins are for those with mobility issues or if there is access to a refrigerator where you can store perishable medication. We want you to have the best weekend possible, so if you have any concerns about your ability to attend, please let us know.

Will I be photographed?

There is a photography waiver on the registration page, which will be clarified upon arrival. We use a coloured lanyard system to indicate who would like to be photographed and who would not, and we will do our best to ensure those who wish to be excluded are not photographed. We cannot guarantee that other campers will follow this system with their personal devices, but we hope that they will be respectful of your wishes and your privacy.

Will I get the courses that I select?

We will do our best to accommodate as many course choices as possible, but there are no guarantees, and choices are first come-first served. We try to offer each course in multiple time slots throughout the weekend to ensure that as many participants as possible get their top choices, but it depends on instructor availability and how much equipment is required for participants. Think about your selection before you click submit, as opportunities to make changes will be limited.

Do you coordinate carpooling or transportation to the camp?

No. Every camper is responsible for getting themselves to camp.

Program Attendees Reflect on Their Experience

“I wanted to become more familiar with the outdoors and what kind of things you can do out here. I was a little nervous, but being out here with tons of other supportive women in a really friendly and accepting environment is so awesome; an unbelievable experience this weekend.”

“I just signed up, didn’t look back, and got super excited and scared. Then, I got here and I had a blast. I cannot get over how much I needed this. I didn’t know that I needed this until I got here and I learned so much; even about things I thought I knew really well… I wouldn’t give up this experience for the world. It has really brought out something in myself that I didn’t realize I had.”
